6060 vs 6063 Aluminium Alloys

6060 vs 6063 Aluminium Alloys — LeKe Piping article cover

Introduction

6060 and 6063 are heat-treatable aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloys commonly used for extruded profiles. For comparable products and tempers, 6063 generally offers somewhat higher strength, while 6060 is often selected for surface finish and decorative anodizing. The choice depends on the required temper, dimensions, finish and service conditions.

Properties

Both alloys offer good extrudability and corrosion resistance in suitable environments. Compare properties for the specified temper, such as T5 or T6, product form and wall thickness. A grade name alone does not define tensile strength, hardness, machinability or the properties of a welded component.

Their specified silicon ranges overlap, so 6060 should not be described as always having more silicon than 6063. The magnesium range for 6063 extends higher, but composition alone does not establish finished-product performance. Welding procedure, heat treatment, surface protection and exposure conditions must be considered; neither alloy is universally superior for welding or marine corrosion resistance.

Applications

Both alloys are used in architectural profiles, window and door frames, furniture and other extruded components. Depending on the design, they may also be considered for railings, electrical components and heat sinks. Structural, marine or pressure-containing applications require verification against the relevant product standard, design requirements and service environment; these examples are not approvals for a particular application.

Conclusion

Compare 6060 and 6063 using the same product standard, temper and dimensional range. Specify the alloy designation, temper, profile drawing or tube dimensions, mechanical requirements, surface finish and inspection documents when purchasing. Confirm any proposed substitution with the designer rather than treating the two alloys as interchangeable.
